Feel on holidays at home with a touch of Thailand.
Be immersed in green borders which provide soft fascinations.
STOKE NEWINGTON OASIS
Location
Situated in leafy Stoke Newington, North East London, this was my full-length Victorian terrace garden.
Brief
To create an urban oasis. Feel on holidays at home!
Design
The design solution was to create a space which felt secluded and enclosed, with a nod to holidays in Thailand. Landscaping was kept to a minimum, instead the space was immersed in naturalistic resilient planting. Favouring sustainability, all existing plants were retained and nursed back to their former glory, combined with new evergreens and perennials. Resulting in a relaxed space with a variety of planting styles in different zones, rather than a strict singular theme.
The space was divided into two rooms, with the first room closer to the house for ornamentals. Bamboo screening framed each side, providing sensory effects as the leaves rustled in the breeze. Pockets of sun were maximised for seating, with planting following the various light conditions. To encourage use of the full length of the garden, the second room at the rear was more functional, with an allotment for edibles, BBQ space and shed surrounded by shade loving plants.
A true multi-use oasis all year round, in the middle of busy Hackney.
