With Easter now with us you’ll need to know what to do with your garden in May.

May is one of my favourite times of year. An optimism is in the air, the feeling that summer is just around the corner. Our gardens start to come to life and we can really start to enjoy time outside.

That’s why May is a great month to dedicate time to your garden. The two bank holidays are on the horizon, so why not spend them tending to your plants, which need loving care.

Here is a small list of jobs I will be getting on with in May and you could too!

  • Shrubs – prune your spring shrubs which have already flowered to keep them in check.

  • Climbers – secure new shoots of climbing plants like Jasmine (Trachelospermum jasminoides), before to they start to really take off.

  • Annuals - Plant seeds into the ground of cosmos, in well-drained soil in a sunny spot, when the threat of frost has passed. I can’t wait to see mine this year!

  • Perennials – plant potted flowering perennials, ensuring they are watered every few days. When watering, try not to get water on the leaves, just around the roots of the plant.

  • Mulch – If you haven’t already, apply mulch to your planting beds ideally 50-100mm thick. I use 20mm pebbles as it’s good for drainage, looks good and locks in moisture, but you could use woodchip too. Stops the weeds growing too.
